This is a very exciting time
to be at Roger Williams University. The
energy is almost palpable in the classrooms,
halls, and faculty offices. The School of Law is known as home to excellent teachers, scholars,
and students, as well as innovative programs.
The diverse members of our
faculty have distinguished academic records
from the nation's finest law schools, and
their essays and articles have appeared
in the law journals published by Cornell,
Michigan, Minnesota, Northwestern, Ohio
State, Southern California, Texas, Virginia,
and Wisconsin, to name a few. Their expertise
is sought for commentary on the issues of
the day by the New York Times, USA Today,
and the Wall Street Journal, as well as
key electronic media outlets, like National
Public Radio and network news programs.
We have a strong student
body, drawn from over 40 states and several
foreign countries, who study in a modern
building, on a beautiful waterfront campus.
The faculty and staff are uniformly accessible,
and students learn the law in a rigorous,
yet supportive environment. RWU provides
the kind of personalized education that
can only be experienced at a relatively
small institution.
Our signature program in
Marine Affairs takes advantage of our unique
location and features a dynamic relationship
with the country's oldest marine science
program, at the nearby University of Rhode
Island. We have three "live client
clinics," taught by some of the best-known
teachers in legal education, and which provide
valuable hands-on experience in criminal
defense, mediation, and community justice.
Each summer, our students
have a chance to study international and
comparative law in Lisbon (the only program
in Portugal approved by the American Bar
Association), or to go to London to "shadow"
a barrister in our Comparative Advocacy
program.
RWU has a deep commitment
to public service, manifest in our Feinstein
Institute for Legal Service, which coordinates
our vigorous public service programs. One
example of its innovative programming is
the Medical/Legal Collaborative, which places
our law students in hospital settings, working
alongside students from the Brown Medical
School, in an effort to provide a fully
integrated array of services to people and
families in distress.
As the only law school in
Rhode Island, we offer a spectacular array
of exciting clerkship/externship opportunities
to fit almost any interest, while our best
student advocates regularly argue their
moot court cases in front of the entire
Rhode Island Supreme Court.
In sum, RWU is a dynamic
environment in which to study law. I invite
you to peruse our website and learn more
about the School of Law.
