Well the 2012 Esther Clark Moot Court competition is in the books, and the crowd at the finals this year was treated to an excellent, very close match-up between 2Ls Antonio Viana and Thomas Pagliarini. The competitors deftly handled a firestorm of questions raised from the Rhode Island Supreme Court, making relatively bloodless preemption issues actually interesting. The justices later commented that besides the excellence of the advocacy, the final decision was “very close” (actually a 3-2 split decision) in favor of Antonio.
The competition is endowed by the family of Esther Clark, a beloved member of the RWU Law faculty 1994 - 2002 and the event also involves an award for “best brief,” which went to 2L Jeffrey Sheehan.
The event also is the formal introduction of the newest members of the Moot Court Board: (Tunde Adepegba, Jose Batista, Samantha Clarke, Nicholas Denice, Jennifer Fournier, Alyse Galoski, Kaela Jalbert, Amanda Leclerc, Paige Munro, Thomas Pagliarini, Alisha Perry, Jeffrey Sheehan, Leticia Tavares, Nicole Verdi, Antonio Viana and Joshua Xavier).
To cap off a terrific evening, we were excited to learn from Chief Justice Paul Suttell that we are invited to hold next year’s competition in the Rhode Island Supreme Court (yet another example of why it is great to be the only law school in the state!).
Below are some pictures from the competition.
