Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Domestic Violence Awareness Month evolved from the first Day of Unity observed in October, 1981 by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.  The first Domestic Violence Awareness Month was observed in October 1987.  In 1989 the first Domestic Violence Awareness Month Commemorative Legislation was passed by the U.S. Congress with such legislation passed annually.

Of note, RWU School of Law Professor Emily Sack is a nationally recognized expert on domestic violence. She is the co-author of the casebook Domestic Violence and the Law: Theory and Practice (Reserve, KF9322 .D35 2013) and author of “The Crime of Domestic Violence,” in Criminal Law Conversations (K5018 .C753 2009).
