My name is Rob Mount and I’m a 3L. I grew up in suburban New Jersey and my formative years were spent in a town called Montville, where I still return to when not doing law-related things. After high school, I matriculated to a small Pennsylvania school by the name of Susquehanna University....

The end of 2L, summer, and catchy shirt and tie combinations.

Hello there,

It's been quite a while since I last blogged; apparently waaay back in April when the legal world was quickly tightening around my neck like a deadly python. Luckily for me, and you, I survived one of law school's rare feats (two exams on the same day) and have officially become a 3L credit-wise.

Now, law school finals are over, so I can speak a bit kinder of them than I would have back in May or April. They suck. Let's be realistic here, I don't care if you're the smartest kid in the school who has access to the best materials, they still suck. They're stressful, destroy your social life, and drive you away or to alcohol depending on when the final is / was. But they're necessary. All of your friends who are pursuing a masters in education, finishing undergrad, or doing something silly like a masters in a liberal art will, without a doubt, whine and complain about the work that they have. Think about this: How much would you do if it meant that you got to write a non-Bluebook research paper for your final? How about read a standard FICTION novel? Or have an idea of what your grade will be like before the final? Exactly.

This is why we get a doctorate in three years.

Anyway, yes, so that's over and though I'm not that kind, I still have a soft spot for law school in my young heart. Now, speaking of my heart, I love summer. Even now, I LOVE summer. I hate the heat, despise the humidity, and I like laying on my floor with the lights off INSIDE, but I still love summer. Why? Because it's a break.

I've done a lot of things with my past summers: I backpacked Europe, went to Australia, moved to Vermont and worked construction, worked for my undergrad's facilities management, coached camps. etc etc etc. Now, it's time to grow up and have the same sort of fun but in a lawyer-ish way.

Now, I can already hear people starting to grumble about internships and clerkships and this and that. They're fun. I'm working at another Public Defender's Office this summer and I love it. The people are nice, the work is good, and for a brief (no pun intended) few weeks I get to pretend I'm a lawyer. Isn't this why you're here? It's like opening a gift on Christmas Eve, except it lasts for 8-10 weeks and you have to wear a tie.

Speaking of which, here's one of my theories: I'm going to dress conservatively when I get a job one day, but right now I use this as a way to test my shirt and tie combinations. The secretaries, who are the nicest people in the office and are wonderful, will comment if you found a good combination. Impress the secretaries and you know you'll look good for a judge or jury. This is how I feel, anyway.

Alright, I'm back to the grind because I am working, but I just felt like I needed to blog to let everyone know I'm still here.

Be good and enjoy your summer,

Rob
