May 22nd is International Day for Biological Diversity, also known as World Biodiversity Day!

Biodiversity is the variety of life on Earth. The United Nations created this holiday to increase awareness and understanding of biodiversity issues internationally. Every year the celebration has a different theme to highlight a specific biodiversity issue in the world; this year’s theme is Biodiversity and Sustainable Tourism.

There are many ways you can celebrate International Day for Biological Diversity right here in Rhode Island. You could visit local farmers markets, take part in a local salt marsh planting event, or just simply observe the natural world around you! You could also check out some of the cool sustainable tourist destinations in Rhode Island, like Rocky Point State Park.
