Looking for something to do in Rhode Island this summer? Look no further than Newport! Housed in Vernon Court, an adaptation of an 18th century French château which occupies one full block of Bellevue Avenue, Newport’s National Museum of American Illustration is a Rhode Island treasure.

Illustration is defined as “art created to be reproduced in books, advertisements, periodicals, and in the new media” and the museum’s collection includes pieces from Maxfield Parrish, Norman Rockwell, J.C. Leyendecker, Howard Pyle, NC Wyeth, Charles Dana Gibson, James Montgomery Flagg,  and Jessie Willcox Smith.

In 2016, this museum was named one of the 50 most fascinating museums worth traveling for on the Flipkey blog!

Adjacent to the museum is the Frederick Law Olmsted Park and Arboretum at the National Museum of American Illustration. Frederick Law Olmsted is best known for having designed parks and landscapes, such as Central Park, Prospect Park, and the White House grounds. The Frederick Law Olmstead Park and Arboretum appears to have the largest Zelkova tree in America
