RWU Law Welcomes the Class of 2016

Posted by David Logan on 08/23/2013 at 02:36 PM

Believe it or not, the new school year is up and running – and we have already welcomed a terrific batch of future RWU lawyers.

There are 115 students in the Class of 2016, equally balanced between men and women. Their average age is 25. They are notably diverse, with 25% hailing from racial and ethnic groups traditionally underrepresented in the legal profession, and they speak many languages including Spanish, French, Arabic, Urdu, Cantonese, and Hindi. Their professional backgrounds are also diverse, including folks who have worked as:

  • the Chief of Staff to the Providence City Council
  • the skipper of a schooner in San Francisco Bay
  • a corrections officer
  • an actress
  • an Alaskan commercial fisherman
  • the Director of Rhode Island’s Fair Housing Commission
  • a staffer at the New Jersey legislature
  • the Program Manager for City Year Rhode Island
  • a caseworker handling domestic violence clients in Pakistan
  • the commanding officer of the USS Porter (along with several other veterans)
  • many college athletes (baseball rugby, football, hockey, crew, and sailing), including the NCAA goalie of the year in lacrosse
  • several who have worked with homeless initiatives (and more than one who has actually been homeless)

The vast majority come from the Northeast, though there are representatives from every region of the country, plus a Canadian. There are two or more students each from Brown, the University of Delaware, St. John’s (NY), Stonehill, Post University and UMASS-Amherst.  The major feeder schools are UConn, BC, Providence College, Rhode Island College, and Roger Williams University; the University of Rhode Island is #1.

During a period in which enrollments are down in law schools across the country – a response to the still-sluggish economy and job market – we've assembled a strong, diverse and highly promising entering class and they will be the first to benefit from our new Guarantee that every qualified student will get the hands-on training that is so essential to success in today’s legal marketplace.

Welcome aboard, Class of 2016!
