A record turnout appeared at an annual event, the Public Interest Potluck, held at the Tiverton home of Professor Michael Yelnosky and Laurie Barron, Executive Director of our Feinstein Institute for Public Service. More than 40 students showed up for dinner and conversation, and we were particularly pleased with the strong showing of the class of 2014.

For 24 years, the Robert Cover Public Interest Retreat has been a highlight of the academic year for the law students, lawyers, and legal academics who are committed to the tough, but deeply rewarding work of public interest practice. Sponsored by SALT (the Society of American Law Teachers), this year’s program was sponsored by RWU Law and attendees from 27 law schools sold out the all available reservations.

The Annual Public Interest Auction was a smashing success this year. Featured in the sleek downtown art gallery space Peerless Lofts and catered by Cuban Revolution, the auction hosted a record-breaking number of 300 guests, and was completely sold out in advance. Among the crowd were members of the legal community, the judiciary, students, and over 40 alumni, who gathered with faculty, staff, and students to gnosh, imbibe, mingle, and bid on over 100 silent and live auction items. As you may remember from a previous blog (“Experiential Learning,” June 23, 2009), twenty-eight RWU Law students were awarded Feinstein Institute Summer Stipends (ranging from $2500 to $3500) to enable them to work in the public sector, and eight more received grants from the Equal Justice Works Summer Corps. I am confident that they all had great experiences, implementing the lessons of the classroom, but three received prestigious awards that deserve special mention.

RWU Law launched its Public Interest Loan Repayment Assistance Program this summer. Created through the generosity of RWU President Dr. Roy J. Nirschel, and Jack and Sara McConnell, the program provides financial assistance to alumni who represent indigent clients in civil and criminal proceedings. Despite the slow down in legal hiring this past year, we are pleased to report that RWU 2008 graduates fared well. In fact 92.1 % of our graduates were employed or pursuing a graduate LLM degree, running slightly ahead of the national average as reported by the National Association for Law Placement, which collects data six months after graduation.
Also noteworthy, 13% of our 2008 graduates were selected for judicial clerkships while nationwide only 9.6% secured those prestigious positions. And, finally, 8% of our graduates went into the public interest sector outpacing the national rate,...

One of the stars of the RWU Law faculty is Emily Sack, who has already earned a national reputation for her work on a broad array of domestic violence issues.
Emily, a Magna Cum Laude graduate of New York University School of Law, has published articles in a number of important law reviews, including the Northwestern University Law Review, the Wisconsin Law Review, and the Washington University Law Review, and has participated in symposia at Brigham Young, Catholic University, and St. John’s law schools.
