At RWU Law, we have a vigorous public interest program. This summer, 35 students were awarded summer stipends that enabled them to work in public interest jobs all over the world. The School of Law funds these stipends with money from the operating budget, and another chunk raised through our Public Interest Auction (Save the date for next year! February 15, 2013).
From Kathmandu to Los Angeles, and New Orleans to the Pentagon (and of course Rhode Island and Massachusetts!), our students pursued their dreams literally all over the globe. What follows is a...

I am delighted to announce that the University has granted tenure to two of our outstanding junior faculty, John Chung and Keeva Terry. Both have impeccable academic credentials (John-Wash U and Harvard; Keeva-Harvard, Michigan, and Columbia) and in just a few years they began winning “Teacher of the Year Awards” from a student body who already were learning from excellent teachers.
More good news: Emily Sack will serve as our Distinguished Research Professor for the 2012-13 and 2013-14 academic years. Emily is a nationally-recognized expert in domestic violence issues, who has published...

This week’s Sunday Times devoted its feature “36 Hours” to the capital city of RWU’s home state, Providence.
Quite correctly, the article points to the influence of arts and universities in making Providence “like Portland, Ore., or Austin, Tex.,… many times more creative and cosmopolitan than its modest population” would suggest. It has “exceptional food, compelling art and architecture, a thriving gay scene and an inordinate number of very smart people. Yet the city remains unpretentious and affordable.” Providence is only a half hour from our Bristol campus, and many law students,...

Over 100 luminaries of Rhode Island’s bench and bar joined by RWU faculty, staff, alumni and students gathered to raise funds for the Pro Bono Collaborative at the Rotunda at One Citizen’s Plaza in Providence. The PBC leverages the historically underutilized resources of the state’s larger, more prominent law firms by connecting them with community organizations and our law students, to help maximize the efficient delivery of legal aid. What began as a pilot project has expanded into a program that engages approximately 25 students per year, working with law firms to provide...

I am pleased to announce that RWU Law alum Robert Coulter ’08, was named one of “40 under Forty” winners by the Providence Business News. This award acknowledges the achievements of young professionals based on their “career success and community involvement.” Rob is a graduate of the Naval Academy who came to RWU Law after earning two Masters Degrees from the University of Chicago, and he continued his stellar academic career by graduating #1 in his law class.
Rob is an associate at Edwards Wildman Palmer LLP, working in the firm’s private equity and venture capital practice group...

Another year, and another cohort of lucky RWU Law students who get an insider’s view of the English legal system by attending our unique summer program in London. Unlike most foreign programs, which are classroom-based and focus on doctrine, the RWU Law program gets our students into the chambers of some of London’s top law firms and judges for what is quaintly called “a mini-pupilage.” This provides an intimate insiders’ view of a legal system that provided the basis for the U.S. judiciary. Led by the irrepressible Barrister Bobby Webster, those who enroll for the maximum number...
