When I left Wake Forest for the deanship at Roger Williams in 2003, I signed a contract for 3 years, hoped to survive for 5 (the typical deanship lasts 4+ years, about the same as NFL coaches), and have now finished my 11th year. During that time I have had the pleasure to work with an excellent faculty (highly credentialed and prolific scholars, but who make teaching their first priority), an amazing staff (also dedicated to student success), and our more than 2,000 alums, who are making their way not just in Southern New England, but across the country. The annual breakfast meeting for the RWU Law Alumni Association was special this year, as law faculty, staff, alums, judges, and practitioners gathered to wrap up our 20th anniversary, thank outgoing and incoming leaders of the Law Alumni Association, and hearing my last speech as Dean, and the first speech from the new Dean, Michael Yelnosky. Almost 200 folks showed up for the annual fundraiser for the RWU Law Pro Bono Collaborative, our unique way to provide much needed representation to low-income Rhode Islanders. This year’s event was special, as we recognized the philanthropy of Mark Mandell, whose support was essential to getting the PBC not just surviving but thriving.
