You may have heard that there was a blizzard working its way up the eastern seaboard this weekend. It hit Rhode Island about 8 hours after I finished my last final for the year. While I still have a paper to write by Tuesday, it felt pretty good to watch the flakes fall from the coziness of a friend’s apartment, knowing that I was done studying for at least the next three weeks. As much as I would like to go sledding, the 9 degree wind chill suggests that Mother Nature would like me to finish that paper before I leave for home tomorrow.
Not that my break will be that relaxing. Unlike first...

Today marks the beginning of the reading period for my last set of fall finals in law school. My nostalgia is predictably overcome by concern that I will fail the two exams I do have.
But third year gives you some perspective. The fear that motivated you in first year is totally gone, and the worry about summer jobs etc. that motivated you in second year is long past. The desire to do well and the desire to take a nice long nap is directly at odds, unfortunately. So the question becomes, what does motivate you in your final year, especially when the siren song of “senior-itis” is so lovely...

One major difference between 1L and 2L year is that you can really get a jump start on investigating internship opportunities. It’s strange, but already there is rush to upload resumes, cover letters, and begin the application process for internships for the summer. It’s only September!!!
Well, I’m guilty of it too. I figure there’s no better way to get starting that

Hello from Texas!
I believe I may have mentioned in this blog that I’m from Texas originally. This past weekend I had the opportunity to come back “home” (same state, different town) to represent Roger Williams at the National Black Pre-Law Conference. It was a fun event and I always enjoy the chance to talk about the law school. Plus I got to see several old friends! This is the second recruiting event I’ve done and I’m starting to notice one of the most popular questions prospective students have asked me is to give them my “sales pitch.” I’ll be honest, I don’t have one. The only thing I...

It’s true, I do hate them. It started in kindergarten and to this day I still refuse to eat them out of protest. What does this have to do with law school you might ask? Nothing. Truly. But my friends have been bugging me to update my blog and it got me to thinking about my lack of focus right now. As a 3L I feel like I’m being pulled in a hundred different directions. I’ve got school (of course), the job I work, the job I’m hoping to find, obligations to friends and family, and school. I did say school twice, I because that’s where it should be. Despite being in my last year there is still...

As I type this, I’m sitting up on the third floor, in the Moot Court cubicle, taking a break from researching an 8th Amendment argument for the Nationals Competition. It is raining cats and dogs outside, which I don’t mind, since I’m relegated to spending this weekend tethered to 5 pounds of westlaw printouts. The wind is howling, the timer on the motion sensor lights keeps going off, and I’m trying to figure out where the evolving standards of decency in American punishment jurisprudence has left us.
Not every weekend is like this, though. Last weekend I traveled down to New York to spend a...

I’m trying to plan a party at my house, just an informal gathering of some friends, some food, some wine, and delightful conversation. But when I got out my day planner, lo and behold, once again my weekends are chock full from here until November. I don’t really know how it happens. One week my date book is full of vast, open expanses of white paper, the next week, I have to double book things. In the next 6 weeks, I’m going to take a trip to Iceland and the UK, head to Washington, D.C. for the Equal Justice Works Job Fair, entertain my parents on a visit from the mid west, and try to...

Walking back into school after being away a few months is strange-- there are familiar faces, and the building itself looks the same, but something feels different. Maybe I’m different. Maybe it has something to do with knowing what to expect, and being a little more ready for it this year than last year. It’s definitely good to be back.
It seems to me there has been a shift in the dynamic-- I am no longer the new kid on campus. Suddenly, there are a ton of new students I don’t know, all scurrying around with that same, familiar deer-in-the-headlights look that I...

So begins my last year of law school, and quicker than I thought I could remember them, my old habits are back. I have once again become a slave to the little white box that houses every document of importance in my life, typing away on the third floor into the wee hours, so late and so alone that the lights shut off and I have to flail my arms wildly in an attempt to get the motion sensor to pay attention to me. This time it is not schoolwork but the post-grad job search that motivates me. But, I’m hoping if I put my nose to the grindstone for the next couple of months, I’ll be able to find...

After 20 years of formal education I am in disbelief that this is the last year. In 9 short months I am going to put on a robe and funny hat, walk across a stage, and finally have that JD behind my name! In the meantime there are classes, job searching, and bar applications. Classes started last week and already I can tell that 3L year is going to be quite different than the last two.
First difference: the job search. My friends and I are already experiencing a variety of differences on this front. One friend has accepted an offer to work at a firm in DC after graduating. My roommate will be...
