Every year, I have the pleasure of kicking off Orientation by introducing the newest class to themselves.  I enjoy sorting through the files and finding interesting tidbits that will give them a sense of the depth and quality of their fellow classmates. At RWU we truly value having students with a wide range of personal and professional accomplishments who will bring those life experiences to bear in classroom discussions.  As you will see, the Class of 2018 is outstanding and only adds to our tradition.   Here are excerpts from my remarks: I am so glad to see the Class of...

The Office of Career Development recently hosted the fall session of their Exploring Your Options event in the RWU Law Atrium. An array of attorneys attended the event to share information with our law students on what it is like to work in different areas of the legal industry, focusing on the public sector. A majority of the employer representatives in attendance were alumni of the School of Law, which allowed students to have more in-depth and personal conversations about transitioning from law student to legal practitioner.  "Exploring Your Options was a great event," said Nicole...

Summer is bliss in Rhode Island.  The sailing is great (teams from Roger Williams, Brown, and URI won national championships) and Newport is a world-class vacation destination, recently featured in the New York Times. On the horizon: the famous Newport Jazz Festival (headliners include Wynton Marsalis, Trombone Shorty, and Esperanza Spalding) and Folk Festival (headliners include traditionalists like Emmy Lou Harris and Earl Scruggs, plus quirkier choices like Gogol Bordello and the Decemberists).  And, of course, there is the wacky Fourth of July Parade in Bristol (been having them...

It’s perfectly understandable why a century ago the superrich chose RI for their summer homes, because summer in RI is sublime. Much of the fun is on the water--the sailing and kayacking are world class (and RWU even provides students free kayacks for exploring Mt Hope Bay). There are also excellent beaches and even surfing. There is also alot for landlubbers, too. You can do no better than the 4th of July Parade in Bristol; the 225th took place on Monday, July 5th (some pics are below) and it was the subject of the cover story of the July 4th edition of Parade Magazine.   July is...

The results from the July bar exam in our home state have come in, and the news is very good. RWU grads beat the pass rate of all takers (RWU grads:83%; all takers:82%) and tied the rate for first-time takers (85%). Especially impressive is the rate racked up by the folks who graduated in May: 87%! This success is not accidental: our strong student body gets a rigorous education in a personalized setting, so they are well-prepared for the challenges of both the bar exam and practice.
