RWU’s stature as a national leader in the field of ocean and coastal law was confirmed at The Coastal Society’s 23rd biennial conference in Miami, Florida. It’s no secret that RWU Law’s faculty comprises a world-class collection of legal scholars and educators. One such standout is Associate Professor Tanya Monestier, who joined us after graduating from both Osgoode Hall, Canada’s top law school, and the University of Cambridge, with an impressive array of honors.

This is the last of 3 blog items on the graduation of the terrific class of 2012. The recessional ended up with another RWU Law tradition: the graduates filing past an applauding faculty, and on to an after-party full of hugs and high-5s. After the processional, the grads, faculty, staff, families, and friends settled in for a brisk, but meaningful ceremony.
The crowd applauded the newly tenured members of the faculty (John Chung and Keeva Terry), the Teachers of the Year (John Chung and John Grasso), the Support Staff Person of the Year (Manny Tavares), and the award of a Distinguished Service Award to retiring Assistant Dean of Career Services Tony Bastone. As the dignitaries and graduates gathered to be robed for the commencement procession, the air was filled with fellowship and a true sense of accomplishment. Besides the de rigeur portraits with the Honorary Degree recipients, I had the amazing opportunity over lunch to hear iconic Federal Judge Jack Weinstein discuss his involvement with Thurgood Marshall’s legal team on Brown v. Board of Education as a young lawyer, plus to watch another RWU Law tradition, the pinning of a boutonniere on the robes of newly tenured faculty...

An annual tradition at RWU Law is a bash for the graduating students at the luxurious Glen Manor estate in nearby Portsmouth. It is a chance to salute the accomplishments of the 3Ls before the formality of Commencement (which I will cover in blogs soon). Congratulations to the terrific Class of 2012!

One of our top junior faculty is Michael Burger, who joined RWU Law after a distinguished academic record (B.A. magna cum laude from Brown; honors graduate from Columbia Law School, where he was Articles Editor for the Columbia Journal of Environmental Law); practice (Associate Counsel for New York City’s Environmental Law Division), and law teaching (at NYU).

The annual 1L Moot Court competition wrapped up as the spring semester wound down. Almost 70 1Ls argued the merits of a cutting edge issue—whether the First Amendment prohibited school officials from sanctioning students debating a school-related issue on Facebook. It was a hectic day for the Moot Court Board, but the competitors were winnowed down to the finalists, Samantha Clarke and Nick Denice, with Nick ending up #1. Congratulations to all the competitors!

The Roger Williams Law community was honored and, frankly, dazzled by the Thurgood Marshall Lecture recently delivered by Martha Minow, the 12th Dean of Harvard Law School, who not only served as a law clerk to Justice Marshall, but also has taught in class a future Justice of the SCOTUS, Elena Kagan, and a future President of the United States, Barack Obama.

The Feinstein Institute for Legal Service recently celebrated the stellar public service of the class of 2012.
