A Talk with David Coombs, Lead Counsel for Wikileaks Defendant Chelsea Manning f/k/a PFC Bradley Manning

Wednesday, September 25, 2013
12:00 pm - 1:00 pm  |  School of Law, Appellate Courtroom 283

Please join RWU Law Professor Emily Sack for a candid conversation with David Coombs, lead defense counsel for Private Manning, the soldier convicted in the largest leak of documents in United States history.  On August 21, 2013, Manning was sentenced to 35 years in prison for providing over 700,000 classified documents to Wikileaks.  On September 3, 2013, Manning filed a presidential pardon and commutation request stating that the conduct was committed “out of a love for my country and sense of duty to others.”

During the course of his representation of Manning, Coombs won praise for his excellent trial work and, in particular, for avoiding a conviction on the most serious charge that Manning was facing, that of aiding the enemy.  The New York Times wrote that Coombs mounted an “aggressive defense” and that he “attacked the government’s case on every conceivable ground, even as he conceded that Private Manning was the Wikileaks source.”

In a statement read on the Today Show the day after sentencing, Manning – who had been previously diagnosed with gender dysphoria – announced that she was female and would like to be known as Chelsea.  She also expressed a desire to undergo hormone replacement therapy while in military confinement.  Coombs continues to represent Manning with respect to the gender issues, clemency matters and presidential pardon.

2nd Annual Professor Anthony J. Santoro Business Law Lecture Series

Thursday, September 26, 2013
5:30 pm - 8:00 pm  |  Omni Providence Hotel, One West Exchange Street, Providence, Rhode Island

RWU Law presents:  “From Lawyer to Fishmonger – What’s the Catch?” featuring Jan R. Schlichtmann, Esq.

Jan R. Schlichtmann is one of the country’s most notable plaintiff’s attorneys, specializing in the area of complex civil litigation. In 1986, he received national recognition for his representation of eight Woburn, Massachusetts families against W.R. Grace and Beatrice Foods for the contamination of the Woburn City water supply by industrial chemicals. The case was chronicled in Jonathan Harr’s 1996 bestseller, “A Civil Action,” which in 1998 became a major motion picture starring John Travolta as Mr. Schlichtmann.Responding to the environmental and economic challenge of our time, Mr. Schlichtmann recently embarked on a new career in oceanic research and innovation.  Taking inspiration from the natural world and working through his startup, Oceanic Innovations, LLC, he hopes to seed sustainable 21st Century harbor front development and marine industry based on the latest principles in ecological engineering, green chemistry, and biomimicry.  Believing that the interplay between food, energy, and water use is determinative of our quality of life, Mr Schlichtmann is driven by the desire to work with others in developing a vitalizing industrial metaphor that is symbiotic with nature.

Seating is limited – Registration is required.

Limited student transportation is available from RWU Law in Bristol to the Omni Providence Hotel.  RWU Law students must register for the lecture and indicate if they wish to take the transportation from Bristol. The coach bus will depart from RWU Law at 4:30 p.m.
