Gigi Sohn
Counselor to the Chairman, Federal Communications Commission

Presents 'Consumer Protection in the Broadband Era: The Role of the FCC'

The FCC is an independent administrative agency that is best known for ensuring universal access to communications, overseeing the broadcast, cable, wireless and broadband industries, and allocating the public airwaves (spectrum).  The FCC also plays a lesser known but equally critical role as a consumer protection agency.  Ms. Sohn will discuss the FCC’s authority to protect consumers from, among others, unwanted robocalls, privacy violations & anti-competitive behavior, and how it dovetails with other agencies’ authorities.

Gigi B. Sohn serves as Counselor to the Chairman in the Office of FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler, appointed by Chairman Wheeler in November 2013. Ms. Sohn served from 2001-2013 as the President and CEO of Public Knowledge and, from 2011-2013 as the Co-Chair of the Board of Directors of the Broadband Internet Technical Advisory Group (BITAG).  Prior to that, she served as a Project Specialist in the Ford Foundation’s Media, Arts and Culture unit and as Executive Director of the Media Access Project. She has served on the board of the Telecommunications Policy Research Conference (TPRC) and on the Advisory Board of the Center for Copyright Information.  Ms. Sohn served on the District of Columbia Bar Board of Governors from 1997-2000.  She has held academic positions at the University of Colorado Law School, the University of Southern California Annenberg Center, the University of Melbourne Faculty of Law Graduate Studies Program, Georgetown University and the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, Yeshiva University. In 1997, President Clinton appointed her to serve as a member of his Advisory Committee on the Public Interest Obligations of Digital Television Broadcasters.  The Electronic Frontier Foundation gave Ms. Sohn one of its Internet “Pioneer Awards” in 2006. In 2011, the Nonprofit Times named her one of its “Power & Influence Top 50” non-profit executives. Ms. Sohn holds a B.S. in Broadcasting and Film, Summa Cum Laude, from the Boston University College of Communication and a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School.
