The 1969 Stonewall Riots marked a critical turn in the fight for LGBTQ rights, serving as the impetus for the formation of several gay, lesbian and bisexual civil rights organizations.  RWU Law’s annual Stonewall Lecture Series honors the numerous individuals who have fought for LGBTQ equality and justice, and the many contributions they have made to advance this modern day civil rights movement.

As Corporate Counsel for Amazon Web Services, Inc., Marek Bute supports the Worldwide Public Sector sales and marketing initiatives in Latin America, Canada, and the Caribbean for Government, Education, and Non-Profit Organizations. Based in the Washington, D.C. area, Bute’s role includes overseeing public sector compliance matters and negotiating and supporting engagements for cloud services with federal, state/provincial, and local government entities, non-profits, and educational institutions in the LCC region, through public procurement, direct pursuits, and partner engagement. In addition, he collaborates with the global expansion team for due diligence and localization efforts, and supports the Public Policy team in efforts to enable public sector expansion in the territory.

Prior to joining AWS, Bute lived in Las Vegas, Nevada for over 10 years where he was a Partner at Snell & Wilmer L.L.P, concentrating his areas of practice in business litigation, with an emphasis on contract disputes and claims relating to construction, public works projects, entertainment, and hospitality. During his time at Snell & Wilmer, Bute’s portfolio included representing performance rights organizations, hotels, casinos, commercial & residential owners, developers, general contractors, financial institutions, and insurance companies in multimillion dollar litigation.

Additionally, Bute volunteered his time to support Lambda Legal as pro bono local counsel for the Plaintiff couples in Nevada’s marriage equality case, Sevcik v. Sandoval, and served as President of the Board of Trustees of Aid for AIDS of Nevada (AFAN), the state’s largest nonprofit supporting those affected by HIV/AIDS.

Born in Poland and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, Bute graduated magna cum laude from Pepperdine University in Malibu, California, with a Bachelor of Arts in Advertising and a Spanish minor in conjunction with an international program in Buenos Aires, Argentina and Madrid, Spain.  After an internship in Bolivia, he returned to the U.S. and completed his J.D., magna cum laude, at Roger Williams University School of Law in Rhode Island.
