Lawyers Without Rights

Some 70 years after its horrors unfolded, the Holocaust still has stories to reveal and lessons to share.

The highly acclaimed international exhibit, “Lawyers Without Rights: Jewish Lawyers in Germany under the Third Reich,” will be visiting Rhode Island throughout August and September, providing a portrait of the fate of Jewish lawyers in Germany — stories that speak to how the Nazis purged Jewish lawyers as one of the early steps in attacking the rule of law in their country.

The showing – which will be installed at Roger Williams University School of Law in Bristol during August, and the U.S. District Court in Providence during September – is co-sponsored by the two organizations, in conjunction with the American Bar Association and the Bundersrechtsanwaltkammer, the German Federal Bar. The exhibit has been shown in dozens of cities in the U.S., Germany and throughout the world.

The exhibit will be available for viewing:

Featured Speaker
Professor Richard H. Weisberg, the Walter Floersheimer Professor of Constitutional Law at Cardozo Law School

The federal district court and the RWU Law School are co-sponsoring the acclaimed exhibit “Lawyers Without Rights: Jewish Lawyers in Germany under the Third Reich.”  The exhibit was produced by the ABA and the German Federal Bar. It is at the law school now, and it will be in the federal district court in September.

The exhibit details the Nazi’s treatment of Jewish lawyers, which included revoking their licenses to practice law.  Some were able to leave the country, but many were ultimately incarcerated or murdered, and the non-Jewish German lawyers largely remained silent. You can find more information about the exhibit here

We cordially invite you to RWU School of Law for an event that will provide further detail on the issues covered by the exhibit.

Professor Richard Weisberg is the Walter Floersheimer Professor of Constitutional Law at Cardozo Law School.  Professor Weisberg has helped litigate successfully in federal courts on behalf of Holocaust survivors and their heirs. He was also the founding director at Cardozo of the Holocaust, Genocide and Human Rights Program and the Floersheimer Center for Constitutional Democracy and writes widely in those areas, including his book Vichy Law and the Holocaust in France.

RSVP requested to the Office of Programs & Events at lawevents@rwu.edu
