Reeves\n United States District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi*\n \n In February 2015\, Judge Carlton Reeves – only the second African-American \n appointed to the federal bench in the State of Mississippi – gained \n national attention after delivering a powerful and impassioned speech to \n three white male defendants he was preparing to sentence for their killing of \n a black man whom they had beaten and run over with a pickup truck. Judge \n Reeves was not shy in addressing the state’s ugly history of racial \n violence\, but he also spoke of the promise that Mississippi’s present and \n future hold. Just three months earlier he had ruled that Mississippi’s \n same-sex marriage ban made same-sex couples and their children \n “second-class citizens” and violated the Due Process and Equal Protection \n clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment.\n \n Judge Reeves has enjoyed a distinguished career as a lawyer and a jurist. \n Upon graduating from law school\, he clerked for Justice Reuben V. Anderson of \n the Mississippi Supreme Court. He practiced law with the Phelps Dunbar law \n firm before serving as Assistant United States Attorney\, Chief of the Civil \n Division for the Southern District of Mississippi. He served nationally on \n the Department of Justice Civil Chiefs Working Group and was awarded a \n Certificate of Commendation for the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. \n Department of Justice. Immediately prior to his nomination to the federal \n district court by President Barack Obama in 2010\, Judge Reeves was engaged in \n private practice with Pigott Reeves Johnson\, P.A.\, a law firm he co-founded \n in 2001.\n \n Judge Reeves is a former President of the Magnolia Bar Association and \n Commissioner of the Mississippi Board of Bar Commissioners. He has served on \n numerous boards and commissions\, including those of the ACLU of Mississippi\, \n Mississippi Workers Center for Human Rights\, Mississippi Center for Justice\, \n Mississippi Access to Justice Commission\, Mississippi Center for Legal \n Services and the Mississippi Capital Defense Resource Center. Judge Reeves is \n also the recipient of many honors and awards including the Magnolia Bar’s \n highest honor\, the R. Jess Brown Award. He was named the Mississippi \n Association of Justice’s Distinguished Jurist of the Year for 2014-2015.\n \n Judge Reeves is a 1986 magna cum laude graduate of Jackson State University \n with a major in Political Science\, and obtained his law degree from the \n University of Virginia School of Law in 1989.\n \n Reception immediately following lecture.\n \n RSVP to lawevents@rwu.edu [1] by January 20\, 2016.\n \n *DIRECTIONS to campus [2]*\n \n *Parking\n *Please enter the campus at the north entrance off of Metacom Avenue.  \n Follow "Law Event" signs for parking.\n \n *\n *\n \n Sponsored by the Office of Diversity & Outreach\n lawdiversity@rwu.edu [3] | 401.254.4522\n \n  \n \n  \n \n \n [1] mailto:lawevents@rwu.edu\n [2] http://law.rwu.edu/admission/plan-your-visit/directions\n [3] mailto:lawdiversity@rwu.edu END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT UID:calendar.10656.field_date.0.11 SUMMARY:Champions for Justice DTSTAMP:20171117T153957Z DTSTART:20160129T230000Z DTEND:20160130T023000Z URL;VALUE=URI:http://law.rwu.edu/event/champions-justice LOCATION:Omni Providence Hotel DESCRIPTION:**\n \n *AUCTION PACKAGES* [1]\n \n Please join us for a special evening to celebrate and support the students\, \n alumni\, partners and friends whose exceptional devotion to social justice \n increases access to justice for all.*\n *\n \n *Honoring the 2016 CHAMPIONS*\n \n *2016 Champion for Justice* - Judge Judith Colenback Savage\n *Alumni Public Interest Champion* - Dena Castricone\, Esq.\, '98 L'02\, Murtha \n Cullina\n *Community Partner Champion* - Dorcas International Institute of Rhode \n Island \n \n *Reception*\n 6:00 – 7:00 p.m.\n Join us as we shine a light on RWU Law students and alumni and celebrate \n their dedication to serving low-income and disenfranchised communities in New \n England and around the country.\n \n *Dinner & Awards\n *7:00 – 8:00 p.m.\n We will applaud the accomplishments of our 2016 Champions for Justice award \n recipients and salute the meaningful difference they have made.\n \n *Public Interest Law Auction*\n 8:00 – 9:30 p.m.\n A new twist on an annual tradition bringing together the Bench and Bar to \n raise funds in support of public interest legal service. Blindspot: Hidden Biases of Good People\n \n \n .. A Keynote Address by\n \n .. Mahzarin Banaji\n Richard Clarke Cabot Professor of Social Ethics\, Department of Psychology\n Harvard University\n \n The School of Law presents its seventh lecture in this series\, which honors \n the memory of Thurgood Marshall.  Thurgood Marshall was a key architect of \n the legal strategy that convinced the Supreme Court to declare \n unconstitutional the doctrine of “separate but equal\,” which had allowed \n racial segregation in public education and many other aspects of American \n life.  Thurgood Marshall later served with distinction and as a protector of \n civil rights as Solicitor General of the United States and later as the first \n African-American Justice on the United States Supreme Court.\n \n *Mahzarin Banaji* taught at Yale for 15 years and is currently the Richard \n Clarke Cabot Professor of Social Ethics in the Department of Psychology at \n Harvard.  She is also Harvard College Professor in recognition of her \n outstanding teaching.\n \n Dr.  Banaji is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences\, and \n Herbert Simon Fellow of the American Academy of Political and Social Science. \n She has received many awards\, among them Yale’s Hixon Prize for teaching \n excellence\, a citation from the President of the American Psychological \n Association\, the Diener Prize for outstanding contributions to social \n psychology\, and named William James Fellow of the Association for \n Psychological Science for significant lifetime contributions to the basic \n science of psychology.  In 2014 she received Barnard College’s highest \n honor\, the Medal of Distinction\, and in 2015 an honorary degree from Smith \n College. \n \n Dr.  Banaji studies unconscious thinking and feeling as they unfold in \n social context\, especially implicit decisions about people’s worth\, \n goodness\, and competence. While most human beings take seriously the idea \n that their behavior ought to be consistent with their stated beliefs and \n values\, research in psychology has challenged that possibility by revealing \n that our minds operate\, much of the time\, without conscious awareness. Dr. \n Banaji’s work has been instrumental in this realization\, and she will \n address the question of how well-intentioned people behave in ways that \n deviate from their own intentions\, and how this state of affairs compromises \n our decisions in legal\, medical\, financial\, and political contexts. \n \n You can find a good example of Dr. Banaji talking about her work here [1]\, \n and you can take the Implicit Association Test\, which she helped pioneer\, \n here [2].\n \n Dr. Banaji is the author of the book /Blindspot: Hidden Biases of Good \n People/ with Anthony Greenwald\, published by Random House.\n \n RSVP by April 11 | Office of Programs & Events | lawevents@rwu.edu [3]\n \n Sponsored by Hinckley Allen\n \n  \n Additional Support Provided by Diversity & Inclusion Professionals (DAIP)  \n \n  \n \n  \n \n  \n \n \n [1] https://thesituationist.wordpress.com/2013/02/14/mahzarin-banaji-on-the-cycle/\n [2] https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/\n [3] mailto:lawevents@rwu.edu END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT UID:calendar.11026.field_date.0.30 SUMMARY:LSAT Free Practice Test DTSTAMP:20171117T153957Z DTSTART:20160507T140000Z DTEND:20160507T173000Z URL;VALUE=URI:http://law.rwu.edu/event/lsat-free-practice-test LOCATION:RWU Law-- Appellate Courtroom (Room 283)\, 10 Metacom Avenue\, Bristol\, RI \n 02809 DESCRIPTION:RWU Law is partnering with The Princeton Review Boston to offer prospective \n students a LSAT Free Practice Test under test conditions on Saturday\, May 7\, \n 2016 from 10:00 AM- 1:30 PM in the Appellate Courtroom (Room 283) of the law \n school.  Come get a sense of your strengths and weaknesses so you know how \n to prep for the real LSAT!\n \n  \n \n Register online [1] to participate in the LSAT Free Practice Test.\n \n  \n \n Please contact Jolee Vacchi\, Assistant Director of Admissions\, at \n jvacchi@rwu.edu [2] or (401) 254-4555 with any questions regarding the event.\n \n \n [1] http://www.princetonreview.com/product/offerings/291554\n [2] mailto:jvacchi@rwu.edu END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT UID:calendar.10531.field_date.0.31 SUMMARY:RWU School of Law Commencement DTSTAMP:20171117T153957Z DTSTART:20160513T170000Z DTEND:20160513T183000Z URL;VALUE=URI:http://law.rwu.edu/event/rwu-school-law-commencement-0 LOCATION:RWU Law | Bristol\, Rhode Island DESCRIPTION:1:00 PM Ceremony\n \n Visit the RWU School of Law Commenement page for *Frequently Asked Questions \n [1]*.\n \n All Class of 2016 graduates are asked to complete the *Graduation Information \n Form [2]* by January 22\, 2016.\n \n Questions | Office of Programs & Events | lawevents@rwu.edu [3]\n \n \n [1] http://law.rwu.edu/calendar/commencement/faqs\n [2] http://law.rwu.edu/graduation-information\n [3] mailto:lawevents@rwu.edu END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT UID:calendar.11346.field_date.0.32 SUMMARY:Accepted Students Day DTSTAMP:20171117T153957Z DTSTART:20160516T134500Z DTEND:20160516T180000Z URL;VALUE=URI:http://law.rwu.edu/event/accepted-students-day-8 LOCATION:RWU Law\, 10 Metacom Avenue\, Bristol\, RI 02809 DESCRIPTION:Accepted Students Day is a wonderful opportunity for those admitted to RWU \n Law for Fall 2016 to meet each other\, tour the school\, chat with faculty \n members\, and get better acquainted with the law school community. \n \n Attendance is by invitation only.  Although the day's events are primarily \n geared towards our admitted students\, a guest is also welcome to attend.  \n Please RSVP here [1] or contact the Office of Admissions at \n admissions@rwu.edu [2] or (800) 633-2727.\n \n **Please read the following materials [3] for the mock class.\n \n **Tentative schedule of events [4].\n \n \n [1] http://law.rwu.edu/node/2439\n [2] mailto:admissions@rwu.edu\n [3] http://law.rwu.edu/sites/law/files/rwu/Admission/pdf/Class%20Reading.pdf\n [4] http://law.rwu.edu/sites/law/files/rwu/Admission/pdf/Distributable%20Agenda.pdf END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT UID:calendar.11171.field_date.0.33 SUMMARY:Master the Basics of Spinal Radiology DTSTAMP:20171117T153957Z DTSTART:20160518T213000Z DTEND:20160518T213000Z URL;VALUE=URI:http://law.rwu.edu/event/master-basics-spinal-radiology-0 LOCATION:Crowne Plaza | Warwick\, Rhode Island DESCRIPTION:*CLE Program*\n \n Presented by Roman Andrew Klufas\, MD\n \n The objective of this presentation is to introduce the legal community to the \n appropriate use and interpretation of spinal imaging\, particularly in the \n setting of trauma. Does your client even recognize that it is in a crisis \n situation which cannot be solved through normal business procedure? Do you? \n Are lawyers ideal candidates to lead the crisis management team or effort? \n What would your role as a lawyer be if your client were Volkswagen facing the \n emissions scandal\, or Chipotle facing the e-coli outbreak\, or Toshiba facing \n the accounting scandal?\n \n Lawyers can play an important role advising a client in a crisis situation\, \n but a lot of other internal business people and external stakeholders can \n play an even more important role\, from the board of directors and senior \n management\, to insurance companies and customers\, to plaintiffs lawyers\, to \n the media and to regulators. How do you respond swiftly but effectively?  \n How can you help preserve the client's brand as well as protect its balance \n sheet from significant litigation or government enforcement proceedings or \n both? Defining the crisis\, understanding the facts\, understanding your role \n as a lawyer\, strategizing a path forward\, and knowing how to communicate are \n the keys to counseling a client through a crisis. Mr. Spacone's talk will \n immerse you in these lessons in the context of a lawyer representing an \n airline manufacturing company after a deadly crash of one of its passenger \n planes\, which may involve a systemic defect\, which could materially threaten \n future revenues and result in significant legal liability. \n \n As senior in-house counsel and crisis manager for an international Fortune \n 300 company\, Andrew C. Spacone was front and center in these types of crises\, \n and he has led teams in developing a formal crisis management plan and \n training for lawyers and other internal stakeholders.  Come see if you're \n prepared for a crisis!\n \n \n *Andrew C. Spacone\, Esq* is an adjunct professor at the Roger Williams \n University School of Law where he teaches mergers & acquisitions\, securities \n regulation and bank regulation.  Professor Spacone spent eight years in \n private practice between the Buffalo\, NY law firm of Jaeckle\, Fleichman & \n Mugeland and the Providence\, RI law firm of Adler\, Pollok & Sheehan\, from \n which he recently retired.  He spent 30 years of his legal career\, however\, \n as in-house counsel at Textron Inc. in Providence. Textron is a worldwide \n Fortune 200 company with operations in the aircraft\, defense and industrial \n products business sectors\, among others. When Professor Spacone retired from \n Textron in 2011\, his position was Deputy General Counsel and Assistant \n Secretary and head of Textron’s litigation department.  While at Textron\, \n he developed and implemented Textron's crisis management program as part of a \n three-person team and was Textron’s first crisis manager\, a position he \n held for thirteen years until his retirement. Every \n year\, derelict fishing gear\, plastic bottles\, plastic bags\, cigarettes\, \n abandoned vessels\, and other debris washes ashore in New England. This debris \n causes negative social\, environmental\, and economic impacts\, such as \n decreased aesthetic value\, harm to coastal ecosystem health\, and damage to \n vessels and gear. These challenges create complex management problems for \n coastal managers and attorneys\, who work to mitigate the creation of new \n debris and remove and manage debris that washes ashore.  \n \n This Symposium will discuss the adequacy of U.S. law and policy to prevent \n the creation of new marine debris and to remove debris once it is created. \n The first session will include keynote presentations on the science\, law\, and \n policy of marine debris. Speakers will then examine case studies from coastal \n New England states to consider how each state identified a marine debris \n problem\, took steps to address it\, and how the approach could serve as a \n model elsewhere. The premise is a civil \n suit: A South Side African-American woman sues a Jewish North Shore real \n estate developer for defamation. The legal issue is whether or not she was \n falsely accused of stealing his watch and was caused financial \n harm. DEFAMATION explores the highly charged issues of race\, religion\, \n gender\, class\, and the law with a twist: the audience is the jury. Through \n deliberations and post-show discussions\, audiences engage in civil discourse \n that challenges pre-conceived notions. After the trial\, the audience engages \n in a 15-minute deliberation led by the judge. The judge polls the audience \n twice - before the deliberation begins and at its end. The final vote ‘for \n the plaintiff’ or ‘for the defendant’ decides the outcome of the trial.\n \n  For more information about DEFAMATION – THE PLAY\, click here [1].\n \n  RSVP to the Office of Programs & Events | lawevents@rwu.edu [2]\n \n  /Presented by the Office of Diversity & Outreach\, School of Law/\n \n / Co-Sponsored by the President's Council on Inclusive Excellence through an \n Inclusive Excellence Mini-Grant/\n \n  \n \n \n [1] http://www.defamationtheplay.com/\n [2] mailto:lawevents@rwu.edu END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT UID:calendar.11921.field_date.0.64 SUMMARY:Providence Law School Fair DTSTAMP:20171117T153957Z DTSTART:20161110T180000Z DTEND:20161110T200000Z URL;VALUE=URI:http://law.rwu.edu/PVDlawfair2016 LOCATION:The New RWU Law Experiential Education Campus\, One Empire Plaza\, 4th Floor\, \n Providence\, RI 02903 DESCRIPTION: \n \n Representatives from  law schools across the country will be in downtown \n Providence on November 10th to meet with potential applicants.  This is your \n chance to meet with decision makers at regional and national law schools and \n to learn more about their unique programs.\n \n  \n \n *Details and Registration* [1]\n \n \n [1] http://events.r20.constantcontact.com/register/event?oeidk=a07ecz3shdp7a3912bb&\;llr=nvxkdjcab END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT UID:calendar.12046.field_date.0.65 SUMMARY:Civil Rights Housing Discrimination – Fair Housing Testing Seminar DTSTAMP:20171117T153957Z DTSTART:20161117T213000Z DTEND:20161117T233000Z URL;VALUE=URI:http://law.rwu.edu/event/civil-rights-housing-discrimination-%E2%80%93-fair-housing-testing-seminar LOCATION:Bay View Room - RWU Law Bristol Campus DESCRIPTION:Fair housing testing is a strategy used to determine whether or not people \n looking for housing are being treated differently based on their membership \n in a protected class.  Join us on November 17\, to learn about fair housing \n testing and how you can get involved.\n \n Admission is free\, but seating is limited.  Please RSVP to: \n https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSereApxY-wj7WxGJqvVQabswfvqoQYszDFzWSYDZTc2oGOuag/viewform \n [1].\n \n /Presented by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)\, the \n State of Rhode Island Commission for Human Rights\, South Coast Fair Housing & \n The Fair Housing Justice Center of New York./\n \n \n [1] https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSereApxY-wj7WxGJqvVQabswfvqoQYszDFzWSYDZTc2oGOuag/viewform END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT UID:calendar.12021.field_date.0.66 SUMMARY:Info Session for Prospective Students DTSTAMP:20171117T153957Z DTSTART:20161121T133000Z DTEND:20161121T170000Z URL;VALUE=URI:http://law.rwu.edu/event/info-session-prospective-students-26 LOCATION:RWU Law\, 10 Metacom Avenue\, Bristol\, RI 02809 DESCRIPTION:We invite you to visit Roger Williams University School of Law (Bristol--Main \n Campus) at our November 21st Info Session!  Come learn about our Affordable \n Excellence Initiative [1] and Clinical Guarantee [2].  You will have the \n opportunity to attend a real first year Criminal Law class taught by \n Professor Emily Sack [3]\, meet with an admissions representative\, and take a \n tour of the law school.\n \n To register for the Info Session\, please RSVP [4] here.  If you have any \n questions\, please contact the Office of Admissions at (401) 254-4555 or \n admissions@rwu.edu.  We look forward to welcoming you to our beautiful\, \n seaside Bristol campus soon!\n \n \n [1] http://law.rwu.edu/node/8051\n [2] http://law.rwu.edu/node/8026\n [3] http://law.rwu.edu/emily-j-sack\n [4] http://law.rwu.edu/node/10221 END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT UID:calendar.12101.field_date.0.67 SUMMARY:Law Alumni Association Holiday Reception DTSTAMP:20171117T153957Z DTSTART:20161201T223000Z DTEND:20161202T003000Z URL;VALUE=URI:http://law.rwu.edu/event/law-alumni-association-holiday-reception-4 LOCATION:Citizens Plaza Rotunda\, One Citizens Plaza\, Providence\, Rhode Island DESCRIPTION:Join fellow RWU Law alumni\, faculty\, staff and friends for a special evening \n to celebrate the season.\n \n /*Law Alumni Association Holiday Reception*/\n \n Catering by Cafe Nuovo\n \n $20 per person\, includes one beverage & hors d'oeuvres\n \n The Law Alumni Association will present the 2nd annual */Alumni Service \n Award/*/ /at the reception.\n \n The */Alumni Service Award/* recipient is* Nicole J.
