Marine Affairs Student Roundtable Luncheon - Dennis Nixon, Speaker
Please join Prof. Susan Farady and staff attorney Julia Wyman for the first Marine Affairs roundtable luncheon of the semester.
Dennis Nixon, Associate Dean at URI's Graduate School of Oceanography, will speak on The Law of Oceanography, or What Every Marine Scientist Should Know About Law But Was Afraid To Ask.
Most marine scientists are fully engaged in the pursuit of knowledge, and dealing with lawyers and law is seen as a painful distraction, something akin to an intellectual root canal. But legal issues do intrude, from seeking clearance to do research in foreign waters to injuries on board. The speaker has been the legal advisor for UNOLS, the University National Oceanographic Laboratory System, for over twenty years and has dealt with issues as diverse as charter party insurance disputes, autonomous surface and submerged research vessels, and Somali pirates. He is currently teaching a course by the same name at the Graduate School of Oceanography, University of Rhode Island.
Please RSVP to marineaffairs@rwu.edu no later than January 23 or stop by the Marine Affairs office to sign up.
