This exciting symposium
will raise questions related to the legislative and cultural environment surrounding
the same-sex marriage debate in
New
England
. The symposium will feature two panels. The first panel will focus
on the same-sex marriage debate in the
state of
Rhode
Island
and will focus on state and federal constitutional challenges, the case law, and
recent court battles including the recent same-sex divorce case. The second
panel will focus on the arguments for and against civil unions versus marriage in
New England
generally. It will examine both social pressures as well as the legal ramifications of both types of unions.
