Yul-mi Cho is from Connecticut and received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Boston University. Before law school she worked alongside attorneys at the Democratic National Committee on a wide range of issues. She hopes to return to DC after law school to practice law and advise political campaigns.
On Rhode Island:
The state offers something for everyone. In one month alone, I found two new nature walks, a bird sanctuary, three antique shops, a winery, a private art gallery exhibiting local photographers’ works, a secluded beach, a great little cheese shop, a self-guided tour of ancient trees, a reasonably priced seafood restaurant, and a fantastic ice cream shop, all within 10 mile radius of Bristol. In a nutshell, the quality of life here is fantastic.
On the benefits of attending the only law school in Rhode Island:
The access to internships and mentors in the state is great. When I meet a judge or an attorney at a networking event, they have been inviting and helpful - as though I was already a member of the legal community. The advice I receive from members of the legal community here is quite practical in terms of finding a job upon graduation.
On her summer job experience:
I interned with a RI Superior Court Judge this summer allowing me to apply what I learned in class directly. It was invigorating to watch and assist with the trials. Not only did I learn a great deal about the legal process and the strategies behind a trial, but I was able to network with legal professionals in Providence. I also was also given the opportunity to participate in trials by assisting the judge with some of her decisions.
On her favorite aspect of RWU Law:
Wherever I look I find support and a willingness to help - whether it be from the administration, professors, student organizations or fellow students. As the first person in my family to go to law school, at times it is difficult to know what exactly are the right things for me to do to gain the most relevant experience. (e.g. What summer internship I should apply for, what elective courses I should take, what organizations to join etc.) It has been immensely helpful to have the RWU community at my disposal to figure out the best way to shape my legal education.
On her favorite professor:
Professor Colleen Murphy is simply great. She teaches by example by being so thoroughly prepared for class. She is very clear about her expectations and how to prepare for her exams. Although the classes she teaches are not easy, I am happy that I was able to give my best in class and on the exams - which, I think is, the most that I can expect in any class.
