Alex Morel graduated from the University of Rhode Island with his bachelor’s in Communication Studies.  Before law school he was working at a large Providence law firm.  He was and remains active in Latino-Dollars-for-Scholars.  His long term goal is to become a sports agent.

On why he came to RWU:
From the beginning of my application process, I felt like I was important and actually mattered.  The Office of Admissions guided me through every step of the application process showing me that I wasn’t just a number, and was actually a person that the admissions office felt could make a valuable contribution to RWU Law.  Another reason I came to RWU was because I felt that I could really make a difference at the law school. Being a young law school, I felt that my contributions could directly impact the school.

On his summer job experiences:
I worked as a legal intern at Nixon Peabody LLP in Providence during my first summer.  My experience at Nixon Peabody truly impacted me on many levels.  Working for a large national firm, I was exposed to many different practice areas and had the opportunity to work on many interesting and sophisticated projects.  My experience at Nixon Peabody impacted the way I look at the law.  Being exposed to a variety of different practice areas helped me realize how the law impacts the world we live in.  During my second summer, I worked as a summer associate at Corley Taveras LLP in Providence.  My experience at Corley Taveras was completely different than my experience at Nixon Peabody in that it was a much smaller firm with a focus on criminal defense work and civil litigation.  Working at Corley Taveras provided me with the opportunity to experience criminal law.  Under our legal system, everyone deserves a defense.  The attorneys that I worked with really emphasized how important it was to provide the best possible defense for defendants regardless of what crimes they were charged with.

On his most meaningful law school experience:
My most meaningful experience in law school was completing the appellate brief assignment as a first year student.  When the appellate brief was first assigned, it seemed like an insurmountable task. I found it very difficult to balance the workload from all of my other classes and still have enough time to work on my brief.  Through hard work and dedication I was able to complete the assignment, and it was the most rewarding feeling I have experienced in law school.

On how his life has changed since law school:
The most important life change that I have experienced since starting law school is reaching a higher level of maturity and professionalism.  Since starting law school, I have worked as a summer associate for two different law firms.  Working at law firms where I am expected to handle certain situations in a professional manner, and conduct myself as a mature adult has changed the way that I carry myself.  My experience has taught me how to act like a lawyer in all aspects of life.
