Public Interest Summer
Internships are a terrific way to gain
experience, make valuable contacts, and
build a powerful public interest resume.
The R.I. State Internship
Program interviews on campus each fall. The
School of Law's Office of Career Services
organizes the on-campus interviews and
coordinates that program.
Beyond state lines, students
work in a wide variety of public interest
settings across the country. The School of
Law participates in the Equal Justice Works
career fair each October and the NYU career
fair each February. Students can also find
valuable information about internships
through the School of Law’s subscription to
PSLawNet
(www.PSLawNet.org).
Students can apply for a
summer stipend through the Feinstein
Institute’s
Summer Stipend Program, which is funded
generously by both the University and the
School of Law. This program is fueled even
further with proceeds from the fun and
hugely successful Winter Auction
co-sponsored each year by the Student Bar
Association and the Association for Public
Interest Law
(APIL). During the summer of 2007,
forty students received stipends to work for
public interest organizations or the
judiciary.
The Feinstein Institute will
hold informational sessions about summer
funding and our Summer Stipend Program early
in the second semester. The deadline for
Summer Stipend Applications is generally in
March.
Post-Graduate Fellowships
are available to exceptional students
committed to a career in public interest
law. These prestigious placements are highly
competitive; interested students should
start planning early in their School of Law
career.
Applications are generally
due during the fall of the second year.
The 2008 deadline for the Equal Justice Works fellowship application is
Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2007. The deadline for
the Skadden Fellowship (www.skaddenfellowships.org/)
is October 1, 2007.
Additional post-graduate
fellowship opportunities are available at
www.PSLawNet.org and in the fellowship
guide available in the Feinstein Institute
Library. Students are encouraged to set up
an appointment with Laurie Barron or Liz
Tobin Tyler to discuss their options well in
advance of the deadline.
