A Changing Landscape: Insider Trading Law

A top expert in the field will unravel the complexities and uncertainties of current civil liability and enforcement practice surrounding insider trading laws.

Stephen L. CohenInsider trading laws are a hot-button issue vitally important to America’s business environment.

Here’s your chance to hear a top expert in the field unravel the complexities and uncertainties surrounding current civil liability and enforcement practice surrounding insider trading laws. Focusing on the unusual historic development of this body of law – and the absence of any federal statutory framework – an experienced attorney in the field will trace changes in the government's enforcement focus, as well as a relatively recent trend of hacking cases that strain the very limits of the law.

Stephen L. Cohen, former Associate Director of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's Enforcement Division, is this year’s speaker for the Professor Anthony J. Santoro Business Law Lecture on Thursday, September 22, 2016 at the Omni Hotel in Providence. From 2004 through June 2016, Mr. Cohen was at the forefront of the SEC's domestic and international enforcement efforts, including investigations of insider trading violations.  He has worked first-hand with the policies and court decisions that continue to shape today's standards of civil liability and enforcement.
