FROM GOLOCALPROV: "Fox Names Susan G. Pegden Chief Legal Counsel" by GoLocalProv Political Team

Susan Pegden '08PROVIDENCE, November 27, 2012: Speaker of the House Gordon D. Fox announced today the hiring of Susan G. Pegden [RWU Law '08] as his Chief Legal Counsel.  She will begin her duties on December 3.

“Sue has vast knowledge of legal matters and is a well-rounded veteran of State House politics in the areas of policy and communications,” said Speaker Fox.  “She will bring a fresh perspective to the many challenges facing our state and she will be a great asset to me and the members of the House of Representatives.”
Susan G. Pegden

Pegden has been with the Providence law firm of Hamel, Waxler, Allen & Collins for seven years, including the last four as an associate attorney.  She concentrated in all areas of civil litigation, including personal injury, employment law, election law, bankruptcy and issues impacting small businesses.

Her previous State House experience began in January 1991 when she served as the deputy press secretary and speech writer for Governor Bruce Sundlun.  From 1998 to 2005, she was the director of communications for Lt. Governor Charles Fogarty, a role in which she also developed policy initiatives.

She has also worked as a political consultant on several campaigns, including those of Myrth York for Governor and Richard Licht for U.S. Senate.  She is the acting chairwoman of the Rhode Island Democratic Women’s Caucus and is a member of the City of Providence Ward 3 Democratic Committee.

Pegden has been active with the Rhode Island Association of Justice (formerly the Trial Lawyers Association), serving as communications director and as a member of its Board of Governors and Legislative Committee.

She is a graduate of the University of Rhode Island and received her Juris Doctorate from the Roger Williams University School of Law.

Pegden lives in Providence with her husband Rob Horowitz and daughter Emily.

She replaces John J. Flynn, who left in June to serve as the Rhode Island Drug Court magistrate.
