Orientation Skills Classes

To help prepare you for an engaging discussion on Wednesday during the academic skills classes during Orientation, please first read the statute from the mythical state of Graham. After you read the statute, please look at the study questions regarding the Shipley case. Then read the Shipley case. After you’ve read the case, contemplate the answers to the study questions. You will not be tested on these materials. These are solely for your learning and will help familiarize you with how law students learn using cases (or appellate opinions). You will also have a short assignment on Wednesday night. We look forward to meeting you very soon!

Welcome to Contracts!  I am looking forward to meeting you all in person in a couple of weeks.

In advance of our first class, please complete the following:

1.  TWEN Sign Up:  You will be provided with a Westlaw password shortly, if you haven’t been provided with one already; be on the lookout for an email from the Law Library.  You must sign up for Westlaw’s TWEN course management platform.  All course materials will be posted on TWEN.

2. Syllabus:  Linked here is the syllabus and course information sheet.  Please look at the syllabus for a sense of macro-organization and read the course information document carefully.

Greetings and welcome to Roger Williams University School of Law!

There are three documents that you need for our first class session.  

The first is a syllabus that identifies the topics we will cover in the fall semester and the pages we will cover during the first month or so.  The assignments for each individual class session will be provided on a weekly basis.  There is no need to study this document: it is just a road map for the semester.

The second document is titled “Background Memo #1: Course Overview.”  It provides detail on how I run the class, how to prepare for class, learning outcomes for the course, and on the assessments that will occur during the semester.  Note that the required casebook is Prosser, Wade, & Schwartz (Foundation Press, 14th ed.); online access is NOT required.

The third document is “Background Memo #2: What in the Heck is Torts?”  This is your first reading assignment and contains the material that we will discuss in the first class session, which I hope will take us thru the bottom of p. 8; in our second class session we will finish up Memo #2 and then discuss our first case, Garratt v. Dailey, which you will find on pp. 17-21 in the Casebook.  I do not have the class rosters yet, but if you last name begins with A, B, C, or D, you should assume that you are “on call” that first week (my “on call” system is discussed in more detail in Memo #1).   Once class rosters are finalized, which I expect will be by August 11, I will be able to specifically identify who is “on call” in plenty of time for the first class.

Finally, note that once the semester begins, I do not plan to use Bridges but instead will communicate by email, so get in the habit of regularly checking your RWU email account.

Course Types

We have classified RWU Law classes under the following headers. One of the following course types will be attached to each course which will allow students to narrow down their search while looking for classes.

Core Course

Students in the first and second year are required to take classes covering the following aspects of the law—contracts, torts, property, criminal law, civil procedure, and constitutional law, evidence, and professional responsibility.  Along with these aspects, the core curriculum will develop legal reasoning skills.

Elective

After finishing the core curriculum the remaining coursework toward the degree is completed through upper level elective courses.  Students can choose courses that peak their interests or courses that go along with the track they are following.

Seminar

Seminars are classes where teachers and small groups of students focus on a specific topic and the students complete a substantial research paper.

Clinics/Externships

Inhouse Clinics and Clinical Externships legal education is law school training in which students participate in client representation under the supervision of a practicing attorney or law professor.  RWU Law's Clinical Programs offer unique and effective learning opportunities and the opportunity for practical experience while still in law school.
