Remembering Bruce I. Kogan
(Nov 1944 - Aug 2025)
Founding Faculty, Beloved Teacher, and Lifelong Champion of RWU Law

Roger Williams University School of Law mourns the passing of Professor Bruce I. Kogan, a founding faculty member and one of the school's most influential leaders. A teacher, mentor, mediator, and twice Interim Dean, Professor Kogan's presence helped define RWU Law from its very beginning.
From the institution's earliest days, Professor Kogan shaped the programs that continue to distinguish it today. He created the externship program, established the clinical law program, and built pathways for students to gain hands-on experience while serving the community. His work was recognized in 2018 with the creation of the Bruce I. Kogan Distinguished Service Professorship. Even in retirement, he continued to teach, most recently sharing his excitement about teaching Estates & Trusts at Widener Commonwealth this year.
"Bruce was an integral part of our law school's success over the years," said Dean Gregory W. Bowman. "After retiring, he continued teaching for RWU Law until recently. He will be missed. The clinics’ conference room in One Empire is named in his honor."
Colleagues and former students remember him for both his intellect and his kindness. Professor Deborah Gonzalez recalled his lighthearted classroom demonstrations with "plaintiff and defendant hats," calling him "witty and kind." Associate Dean Michael Donnelly-Boylen reflected, "Few people have made a bigger contribution to this law school. I was lucky to have been hired by Bruce and to benefit from his mentorship. I am not sure the man ever said no when RWU Law asked."
That willingness to step forward was a hallmark of his career. "He seamlessly stepped in wherever and whenever needed," said Feinstein Center Director Laurie Barron.
Professor and Former Dean Michael Yelnosky captured the breadth of Bruce's impact:
"When the law school opened in 1993, Bruce began the hard work of building relationships in the Rhode Island legal community. He was, in many ways, our first ambassador, and students have benefited from those connections for over thirty years.
I don't recall Bruce ever saying no to the university or law school—whether it was something extra, difficult, or thankless, he always stepped forward. Naming the Distinguished Service Professorship in his honor was exactly right; it stands as both a tribute to him and an aspiration for all of us. Thank you, Bruce."
Professor Bruce I. Kogan leaves a legacy that will endure in every student he taught, every colleague he mentored, and every program he built to last. RWU Law is stronger because of him, and his vision will continue to guide the school for generations.
