Law School Mental Health Day: Take the Break

While everyone’s life is different—different goals, setbacks, successes, and behaviors—one feeling we can all relate to is the rush we feel in our daily lives to get things done. With the world moving at a faster rate than ever, with constantly changing news and priorities, it’s become increasingly difficult to remind ourselves that moving slow and steady might just be exactly what we all need.
Alongside the World Health Organization, the American Bar Association recognizes Global Mental Health Day on October 10th, deeming this “Law Student Mental Health Day.” This week, take time to pause and check in with yourselves and your classmates. It’s also the perfect moment to stop and take a break. Wherever you find yourself today, I encourage you to do one simple task: still for 30 seconds. Take off your headphones, close your laptop, flip over your phone, and sit with yourself for a small moment of your day. Remind yourself that this moment requires nothing from you. There is no “right” way to do this, just be still and take a breath.
As a student, it is important to remember the resources accessible through the university. For example, you can make an appointment at the Counseling Center by calling 401-254-3124 or by visiting the 2nd floor of the Student Development building. Additionally, Dean Lalli – Associate Dean of Student Life and Operations – is available in the Dean’s Suite to answer questions or concerns regarding student support and academic success. More information about specific resources for law students can be found on the RWU Law Student Support page.
The library is also here to help in any way we can, such as creating fun educational activities to help improve your knowledge of library operations. Have you found a ghost in the stacks yet? If you don’t know what I’m talking about, visit our social media Facebook, Instagram, or X @rwulawlibrary social media pages! If you’re looking for ways to manage your stress more actively, visit our Stress Management, Mindfulness and Wellness LawGuide, which details available resources to get moving, like the fitness center and campus seashell path.
Whatever your needs are, the most important take-away is that the law school and university staff are here to help in any way we can. Please do not hesitate to ask for help. Oh, and remember, it’s ok to take a break.
